Writers congregate

Chinese novelist Yan Lianke and poet Duo Duo will speak at the 2009 Singapore Writers Festival (SWF), which started on Saturday and will run until Nov 1.

More than 40 writers from over 20 countries and regions around the world join this year's SWF in a series of activities to discuss issues such as nationhood, literature, identity and individuality.

Organized by Singapore's National Arts Council and The Arts House, the biennial SWF is the country's only national literary festival and one of the few multilingual literary festivals in Asia, focusing on four languages - English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil.

SWF started in 1986 as Singapore Writers Week before becoming Singapore Writers Festival in 1991.

More or less

The four-month "Less is More" environment protection campaign has just wrapped up in Beijing with awards to people and organizations.

The award winners include stars such as pop singer Huang Zheng, Su Xing, Kelly Cha and actress Miao Pu, for their design of environmentally friendly daily use articles. The weekly magazine Lifestyle and China Radio International won the media award to promote environmental protection.

Started in June, "Less is More" calls for simple lifestyle changes to reduce carbon footprints. It includes a cycle race and a waste products design competition. Many stars participated in the activities and actress Zhou Xun was chosen as a spokesperson.
