Unique technique displayed

Acclaimed Chinese craftsman Li Yixuan has produced a set of porcelain vases using the unique "knife-drawing" method as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of New China's founding.

Each of the Vases of the Five Great Mountains features a depiction of one of China's five most famous mountains. Li was the first to develop the knife-drawing method, which fuses traditional Chinese painting and Western oil painting styles. The show also features calligraphy by Aisin Gioro Yuren and Li Shuqi.

Soprano raises her voice

Chinese soprano Wu Na gave a recital at Hefei Grand Theater in Anhui province's capital on Sunday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of New China's founding and the opening of the new Heifei Grand Theater.

The Anhui native studied singing at the PLA Arts School. After graduating in 2001, she joined the Song and Dance Company of the Political Department of the PLA.

Wu will donate the box office revenues to students in Anhui's impoverished countryside.

Buddhist leaders meet

More than 1,000 Buddhist monks and nuns, and 100 selected veteran calligraphers from across the country attended a recent gathering at Pushou Monastery in Mt Wutai, a newly designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

The event included a massive sutra-copying ceremony, the opening of a Buddhist calligraphic art exhibition and an academic seminar.
