Is Graffiti An Art Form?

Many of the new graffiti artists, or writers, do not understand the skill involved, Merling said. Many think that it's just spraying paint on a wall, but like any other art, it requires much time, effort and skill, he said.

Graffiti art consists of styles such as bombing and piecing. Bombing is what it sounds like: the artist 'bombs' an object by using spray paint or marker, and then quickly leaves. These pieces of graffiti, seen often on highways, are usually in black and white paint and take a short time to do.

The more complicated form is piecing. These are the jaw-dropping, elaborate illustrations. They consist of many colors and usually take more than one day's work. This art form has grown rapidly and caught fire in many urban areas across the world.

Solutions to Legalize Graffiti

If it wasn’t for the fact that most graffiti is placed on private property without the owner’s permission, then it might be more recognized as a legitimate form of art. Most graffiti art, however, is only an annoyance to the property owner, who is more likely to paint over it or remove it than applaud its artistic merit. In someone’s eyes, graffiti is an "underground sub-culture, like hip-hop and punk rock used to be."

Although graffiti is an art form to some, to others, it is a crime. But in some cities, efforts have been made to legalize certain forms of graffiti.
