Tiantai Mountain

Today, existing ancient temples, such as Guoqing Temple, Fangguang Temple and Gaoming Temple, are listed as national key Buddhist temples. Wannian Temple is listed as the famous Buddhist "Ten Temples on Five Mountains."

Among the temples, Guoqing Temple, which is the most famous, lies at the foot of Tiantai Mountain. It is the birthplace of Tiantai Buddhism. The temple, which has been renovated several times, underwent the most recent renovations in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and then in 1973. There are now 14 halls and over 600 rooms at the temple. Its architectural style is grand and unique, making the temple a popular tourist destination in Zhejiang.

Tiantai Mountain is also the original mountain of the South Sect of Taoism. Gexuan in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) first founded the "Ge Zhengjun Tiantai Sect" of Taoism; in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), Zhang Boduan founded the Ziyang Sect, and the duo was later worshiped as the founders of the South Sect of Taoism. Today, Tongbai Mountain, located inside the Tiantai Mountain Scenic Resort, is known as the original birthplace of the South Sect of China's Taoism; the Yujing Cave on Chicheng Mountain is No 6 of the "Ten Great Caves" of Taoism.

Tiantai Mountain is the home of Monk Jigong, the "living Buddha," and there is a Temple to him on Chicheng Mountain. Hanshanzi, the monk who wrote many Tang Dynasty poems, used to live as a hermit on Tiantai Mountain for 60-70 years, leaving behind many poems and stone carvings.
