Huangpu River and the Bund
The main tasks of Huangpu River are, therefore, flood diversion, preventing
water logging and sewage treatment. On the other hand, Huangpu River is also a
scenic resort.
Huangpu River Cruise
In recent years, Huangpu River cruises have become a very important tourist
item in Shanghai, not only because the river is the epitome of the city, but
also because the best landscapes of Shanghai are assembled along the two banks
of Huangpu River.
A cruise along the
river is essential for tourists to get a panoramic view of the fascinating city;
it is also one of the best ways to see both old and new Shanghai. As you sail
down the river towards the East China Sea, enjoy a full view of the Bund and the
21st-century cityscape of Pudong -- a row of magnificent buildings along the
bank.
Along the river, tourists can check out the city's skylines, the Old City,
the bridges built along the river, the busy port area, the Bund with its
historical Western style buildings, the Hongqiao International Airport,
Changxing Islet, Chongming Islet, and the site of an ancient fort. A mixture of
the heavily silted waters of Huangpu River and the clear ocean tide creates
three beautiful layers of yellow, green and blue at the Wusong Estuary.
On one side of the
river is the Bund, which is regarded as a landmark and the birthplace of
Shanghai. With a length of one kilometer, the Bund is dotted with various
grandiose, solid Western-style buildings dating back to the early 20th century.
With such imposing structures, the Bund is also known as "an international
exhibition of architecture". Conversely, east of the Bund is a newly developing
Shanghai.
The experience of sailing under the futuristic Yangpu Bridge is very
different from the more traditional river traffic of barges and ferries.
Departing from the Bund waterfront every hour from 10 am to 9 pm daily, cruises
vary in length between one to three hours.
