Huangpu River and the Bund
It is amazing that this ultra-modern tower combines ancient concepts such as
the spherical pearls, with 21st Century technology, commerce, recreation,
educational and conference facilities. All of this and it really is a TV and
radio tower that services the Shanghai area with more than nine television
channels and upwards of ten FM radio channels. Truly, "oriental pearl" is the
most suitable name for this tower.
About Huangpu River
Located in the southeast end of the Taihu
Lake, Huangpu River has a drainage area of 3,653 square kilometers and
ranges 114 kilometers from its source, Dingshan Lake, northward to the Wusong
Estuary, where it converges with the Yangtze River. Some 40 kilometers of the
river flows through the City of Shanghai. Although the river is only about 400
meters wide and 9 meters deep, it sustains about one-third of China's total
international trade traffic. Huangpu River is the pulse of Shanghai.
Huangpu River is a major
drainage channel of the Taihu Lake drainage area, and also a vessel for
drainage, irrigation and transportation. Flood diversion, water-logging
prevention, agricultural irrigation and transportation in the upper and middle
reaches of Huangpu River affect the overall planning of the Taihu Lake drainage
area to a great extent, while the lower reaches of the river are located within
the City of Shanghai and are closely linked with the development of the
metropolitan.
Since about 50 percent of Shanghai lies below 4 meters above sea level, the
flood-diversion walls along Huangpu River and its branches must always be up to
standard to prevent great floods. But the safety of Shanghai residents is still
challenged by the possibility of great tides caused by storms. Shanghai is
plagued with a comparatively low sewage-draining capability and most of the
city's regions do not reach the standard of 36mm/L. After heavy rain, much water
is retained in the downtown core for an extended period of time.
