As the popular saying goes, springs
in Jinan occupy the first place in the world. With more than 100 springs, Jinan
is famous for its springs, among which the Baotu Spring is known not only as
the first one in Jinan but also as one of the four famous springs in China. The
Baotu Spring is now one of the three major places of interest in Shandong
Province.
Known as the First Spring under
Heaven, the Baotu Spring has a long history of more than 2,600 years, with its
earliest account in Spring and Autumn Annals. It was also the source of
the Leshui River in ancient China. When water gushes out through the three
holes, the spring sends out thunderous sounds, and water columns surge upward,
looking like spinning wheels. The volume of the gushing water can reach 1.6
square meters per second.
The Baotu Spring Park has memorials of Li
Kuchan, a master in traditional Chinese Painting, Wang Xuetao and Li Qingzhao.
The park also holds performances of Peking Opera all year round. With ten
cultural features, including the spring, rocks, opera performances, lanterns,
chrysanthemum, calligraphy, paintings and stone tablets, the Baotu Spring Park
has become a world famous tour spot, which synthesizes characteristics of both
the south and north parks in China and combines the spring, rocks and culture of
landscape garden in one park.
