With a history of over
3,000 years, Chongqing is a famous city for its splendid culture and honorable
revolutionary tradition. The Jialing River, which was once called the Yushui
River, won Chongqing the short name of Yu. Thanks to its geographic location and
abundant natural resources, Chongqing has been the center of politics, economy
and military in the Bayu region since the ancient times. It is also an important
transportation pivot and port of the inner river area in the upper reaches of
the Yangtze River.
Being a
famous comprehensive industrial city and the most technologically advanced city in
the southwest of China, Chongqing was once the city directly under the
jurisdiction of the provincial government. On March 14, 1997, Chongqing was approved to
be the fourth municipality of China in the Fifth Session of the Eighth Meeting of
the National People's Congress. It is the only municipality in the hinterland of
middle and west China.
Surrounded by
rivers and mountains, Chongqing has a hot and humid climate and is called the
capital of fog. With part of the Three Gorges in its territory, Chongqing is a
famous tourist spot in China.
