Tangzi Street Frescoes of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom

The Tangzi Street Frescoes of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom are located at No 74 Tangzi Street, Hanximen in Western Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

Discovered in 1952, these frescoes are representative of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom frescoes that have been found up to now. This is the original location of the office for the officer in the charge of Prince Yang Xiuqing: a single-storied, post and panel structure with gray tiles that faced south.

There are 18 Tangzi Street Frescoes of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in total, all of which are wash paintings located in the main hall and on the lime wall or board in the second hall. The main hall has eight frescoes. On the front wall is the Picture of a Peacock and Peonies, measuring 233 by 336 centimeters; on the eastern and western walls respectively are four huge landscape paintings: Mountains, Hall on the River, Waterfall and Balcony Looking Over and a gallery of flower and bird paintings: The Steed, Two Deer and The Red-Crowned Crane. On the walls in the second hall is another gallery of flower and bird paintings: Lotus and Mandarin Ducks, Appreciating Cranes and Deer in Spring, Lion Playing Ball, Picture of Fish Swimming , etc.

The Tangzi Street Office Frescoes explain the temporary military and economic life through lively landscapes with a dense country flavor. However, there are no people depicted in the frescoes.
