The Huangpu Military Academy site, in
actuality the Army Military College, lies on Changzhou Island in Huangpu, over
20 kilometers from the southeast Guangzhou City of Guangdong
Province.
Huangpu Military Academy was the result of the first KMT-CCP
cooperation. It was founded in May 1924 when the KMT had just accomplished a
reshuffling with assistance from the Communist International and the China
Communist Party, when the First Congress of the KMT of China had just closed. To
cultivate military officers for the revolution, Sun Yat-sen chose the old
residence of the Guangdong
Naval Academy and Army Academy as the site for the Army Military College.
Huangpu Military Academy was led by Sun
Yat-sen, general director; Chiang Kaishek, president; Zhou Enlai, dean of the
political department; Ye Jianying, deputy dean of the teaching department and
other communists, such as Xiong Xiong, Yun Daiying, Xiao Chunv and Nie Rongzhen,
who served as instructors. The academy offered courses in infantry, artillery,
military engineering, politics, military police and orderly. From 1924 to 1927,
Huangpu Military Academy offered four terms of study to 4,981
students. Some of the school's students included Liu Zhidan, Chiang Xianyun, Xu
Xiangqian, Chen Geng, Zuo Quan, Xu Jishen, Zhou Yiqun, Zhou Shidi, Lu Deming,
Tao Zhu and other proletarian revolutionists and military officers of the older
generation.
In the war to unify Guangdong Province and the Northern Expedition War,
teachers and students of Huangpu
Military Academy rendered military exploits
repeatedly.
Many relics, such as the Huangpu Military
Academy gate, Sun Yat-sen's old residence, the monument to Sun Yat-sen, the
mausoleum for the martyrs of the Dongjiang Battle and the academy club, still
remain at the site to this day. Also on display at Sun Yat-sen's old residence
is the Exhibition Hall for the historical materials of Huangpu Military
Academy.
