Feng Huan Tower

Tower is a pair of symmetrical buildings in front of a ancient building complex. The tower is the symbol of the celebrated position of the owners of the building complex with the function of gate decoration. The building of the tower has more than three thousand years, but only more than twenty of them are extant, and six or seven of them are in Quxian County of Sichuan Province. So Quxian County is also known as the Hometown of Towers of the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). Towers of the Han Dynasty are the collective name for the towers built during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) to the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316).

The most famous towers in Quxian County are Feng Huan Tower and Prefect Shen Tower, which were in the name list of cultural relics under the state protection published earlier by the State Council. Feng Huan Tower is located in Zhaojiaping 29 kilometers to the north of Quxian County of Sichuan Province. Mr. Feng Huan lived in the Andi reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and he was once appointed as prefectural governor of Youzhou. In the first year (121) of Yanguang reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty, he was framed up and put into prison. Feng Huan Tower was built around 121 with very delicate carvings and an elegant shape.

The towers were in pairs, one in the east and the other in the west, but only the east tower remains. The tower is 4.38 meter high, consisting of 6 parts, namely the tower base, body, beam layer, media stone, corbel brackets layer and the tower top. It is a complete imitation of wood-structure building. The tower body is piled up by three layers of stones: first layer, carved with the crisscross beams; the second layer is of media stone, thin, flat and square in four sides full of very shallow basso-relievos; on the third layer, the stones look like flying out with the reversed ladder shape and the arch shape on both sides. The roof has double eaves, and is covered with simple tiles with patterns of grass and leaves. Feng Huan Tower features a sedate and simple style, and the carvings are delicate and elegant. It shows the very advanced architectural art of the Han Dynasty, so it is a treasure in the history of Chinese architectural art.
