The Monument to the Heroes of the People stands in the Center of Tian'anmen Square in Beijing City.

The Monument to the Heroes of the People has a square shape with a total area of 3,000 square meters. It is 37.94 meters high. The base of the monument has two layers surrounded by white marble balusters. On the four sides there are sidesteps to the ground. The bottom base shapes like a Chinese flower crabapple and is 50.44 meters wide from the east to the west and 61.5 meters long from the north to the south. The upper layer is square. The monument body is supported by a two-layer high base with decorated moldings. The lower layer is narrow in the middle and is decorated with 10 white marble bas-relief carvings that depict chronological events during the revolutionary period: Destruction of Opium at Humen in Guangdong Province, Jintian Uprising, Wuchang Uprising, the May 4^th Movement, the May 30^th Movement in Shanghai, Nanchang Uprising, the Anti-Japanese War, and the Successful Crossing of the Yangtze River. There are over 170 characters in the bas-relief carvings, which are 2 meters high, 2-6.4 meters wide, with the total length of 40.68 meters. They resumptively present the tough course of the Chinese Revolution. The upper layer of the base is carved with the garlands of chrysanthemum, lily, water lily, and peony, etc. Two inscriptions in gilded characters decorate the monument body, which is a gigantic stone weighing 110 tons of 14.7 meters long, 2.9 meters wide, and 1 meter thick. On the northern side there is an epigraph written by Mao Zedong. It reads: The heroes of the people are immortal! On the side facing south there is an epigraph from the late Premier Zhou Enlai. On the two sides, it is decorated by the bas-reliefs of garlands made up of five stars, pines and cypress, banners, etc. The whole monument is built up with over 17,000 granites and white marbles. Standing upon the central axis of Tian'anmen Square and slightly to the south of the center, the monument is a spectacular sight.

On September 30, 1949, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference passed a decision to build the Monument to the Heroes of the People. Mao Zedong laid a foundation for the monument. Construction of the monument began in August 1952, and the completed structure was unveiled on May 1, 1958.
