In the seat of today's Jiangling County, which was called Jingzhou in ancient times, now stand government offices of Jingzhou City and Jingzhou District. Jiangling County is situated down the Yangtze River bank in south Hubei Province. With Jianghan Plain in the west, the Yangtze River in the South and the Hanshui River in the North, it reaches the region of the West Sichuan Plain and neighbors Hunan and Guangdong provinces in the south. It is the pivot of seven provinces in ancient times.

Numerous ancient architectures can be found in the city. The famous places of interest are the Taihui Temple, the Kaiyuan Temple, the Zhijia Hill, the Luomao Hill and Huashan Mountain, etc. The Taihui Temple was originally built by King Xiangxian named Zhu Bo in the 26th year (1393) of the Hongwu reign in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The main hall was built on the high platform. Covered with brass tiles and decorated with magnificent drawings, the palace was called the little golden roof, or the Second Wudan.

Jiangling was proclaimed as one of the 24 cultural and historical cities by the State Council in 1982.
