Cliffside Carving of Yunfeng and Tianzhu Mountains

The Cliffside Stone Carvings of Yunfeng and Tianzhu mountains are engraved on the cliffs in Yunfeng Mountain and Daji Mountain in the southeast of Yexian County, and north of Tianzhu Mountain in Pingdu County, Shandong Province.

There are over 30 stone inscriptions in the area, all of which were written by Zheng Daozhao and his son Zheng Shuzu around the year 511.

The stone carvings on Yunfeng Mountain are the most famous. The stele, which is 3.4 meters high and 4.65 meters wide with a total of 1,244 words, records the story of Zheng Yi, the father of Zheng Daozhao. Others, like the Poem for Sea Watching and On Poems, are excellent representations of the art of stone carving. The striking calligraphy follows the Wei (220-265) style with transitional characteristics from the Han style to regular script. The carvings are highly praised by many calligraphers, and are valuable reference for the study of the evolution of the Chinese characters and the art of calligraphy.
