Iron Pillar of Nanzhao

The Iron Pillar of Nanzhao is located in Miaoqian Village, Taihua Town, six kilometers northwest of Midu County, Yunnan Province (former Tiezhu Temple).

Built in 872, the Tiezhu Temple consists of a gate, front yard and back yard, and covers a land area of 5,541 square meters and a flour area of 1,524 square meters. The Iron Pillar stands in the center of the main hall in the front yard. Also called the Tianzun Pillar, the Iron Pillar of Nanzhao is a cylinder with a height of 3.30 meters, a diameter of 32.7 cm, a circumference of 1.05 meters and a weight of 2,069 kg. While the top of the pillar has been destroyed, its body was cast by connecting five sections. The pillar serves as an important material reference for the study of religious rites and the smelting technique.
