The Statue of Laojun (the Old Lord) is located at the foot
of the Luoshan and Wushan mountains at the right summit of Qingyuan Mountain in
the northern suburb of Quanzhou City, Fujian Province.
Qingyuan Mountain is known as Penglai Mountain of the Minhai Sea for its
beautiful scenery and abundant relics. During the Song Dynasty (960-1279) it was
a concentration area of Taoist temples, and the Beidou Temple at the foot of
Luoshan Mountain, and the Zhenjun Temple at the foot of Wushan Mountain. Most of
the Taoist buildings have been destroyed, with only the Statue of Laojun
remaining.
The statue, 5.1 meters tall, 7.2 meters thick and 7.3 meters wide, is an
excellent work of the Taoist stone carvings of the Song Dynasty. The statue was
carved from a natural rock delicately, exhibiting only slight changes. Laojun's
left hand is touching his knee, his eyes are looking into the distance and his
ears are touching his shoulders. The carvings of the head, forehead, eyes and
beard are delicate with high art value.
