Site of the Altar in Luzu Hall of the Yihetuan Movement
The site of the Altar in Luzu
Hall of the Yihetuan Movement is located in No. 18, Hejia Hutong, Ruyi'an
Street, Hongqiao District, Tianjin City.
Architecture in this site was constructed in 1719, which was originally a
Taoist temple of Lu Dongbing, one of the Eight Immortals in the legend. It
experienced rebuilding many times. The main buildings include the gate, the
front temple, the back temple and Five-Immortal Hall.
In 1900, the Yihetuan Movement broke out. In May that year, several
thousand people led by Cao Futian entered Tianjin, chose Luzu Hall as their base
and set up the general altar to fight against the Eight Power Allied Force.
Later, two other Yihetuan leaders, Liu Chengxiang and Lin Hei'er, together with
Zhang Decheng, the leader of The First League Under the Sun in Duliu Town ,
often came to this place to worship the altar and have meetings to work out
countermeasures against the Allied Army and command the Yihetuan. Luzu Hall
became the command center of Tianjin Yihetuan during the several months of
Yihetuan's fierce fight against the imperialistic intruders.
