Cai Wenji, the daughter of the great scholar Cai Yong, was captured by the
Huns and became the wife of the Zuoxian King. Twelve years later, Cao Cao, the
prime minister of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), led a large number of forces
to get Cai Wenji back to the Han Dynasty. But Cai now faced hard choices: On one
hand, she could not live without her beloved husband and children; on the other
hand, she thought about her hometown all day long. At last, Cai decided to go
home for the peace and comity of the two peoples.
The scenes and plots in the play are generally based on the experiences of
Cai. The historical theme is reflected in a way of strong human interest. Since
Cai was also known as one of the most famous female poets in ancient China, the
overall style of the play is of a strong classical poetic effect, which gives
the play an ethereal feeling. Furthermore, the form of Huiju Opera adds an
ancient and elegant flavor to it.
