The Verve of Dunhuang
(2004-01-21)

The musical dance drama, "Verve of Dunhuang", is based on ancient Dunhuang musical scores, ancient musical instruments and Dunhuang colored sculptures, and frescoes, which have been explored and studied extensively. The piece perfectly revives the miraculous essence of Dunhuang music and dance.

The Dunhuang Maogao Grotto, located in West Gansu Province, has always been praised as a uniquely brilliant art museum with a worldwide reputation. Altogether there are more than 2,400 colored sculptures and 4,500 square meters of frescoes in almost 500 grottoes. All of these art works reflect the daily life, customs and rites, costumes, astronomical and geographical knowledge, medicine and science, technology, songs and dances of various ethnic groups for some 1,560 years in ancient China. It is a wonder of the cultural history of all human beings around the world.

Art enthusiasts at the Dunhuang Arts Theater of Gansu Province dedicated themselves to studying Dunhuang art some 30 years ago. With their hard work and intrepid spirit, they created a large-scale dance drama "Flowers on the Silk Road", which had been performed in many countries to high praise from audiences. The piece was recognized as a milestone in Chinese dance history and a classic Chinese dance work of the 20th century.

The dramatic dances and moving songs briefly take our spirits and souls to the ancient Silk Road, which, today, has become a bridge of friendship among people all over the world.

  Bell Dance of Loulan

As a large-scale group male dance, it is part of the famous epic dance drama "Rain of Flowers on the Silk Road". The dance revives the exotic scene and dancing style of the ancient Loulan State along the Silk Road.

Female Group Dance: 1,000-handed Buddha

The dance is based on the 1,000-handed Buddha fresco in Dunhuang. The dance not only displays the symbol of Buddhist culture, but also the beauty of Dunhuang Art.

Female Group Dance: Rhyme from the Tang Dynasty

The dance was introduced to Central China from western regions along the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The style was well established and very popular among nobility.
