The Glee Club of the China Central Opera House (COH), whose predecessor was
the chorus of the COH's opera troupe, has been active in both operatic and
chorus-arts fields since the founding of the Central Experimental Opera House
early in the 1950s.
The Glee Club has rehearsed and produced various Chinese operas, including
Wang Gui and Li Xiangxiang, Liu Hulan, Song of Grassland, Spring Thunder, Clouds
Longing for Husband, Ayiguli, Great Wall in the South Sea, Flower-Guard God, the
100th Bride, Army and People March, Marco Polo. Meanwhile, it has also
participated in many famous foreign operas, such as La Traviata, Madama
Butterfly, Youth Guards, AS Pushkin Eugene Onegin and Carmen. In addition, the
club even attached itself to the production of two US melodramas - A Salesman of
Musical Instruments and the Whimsicality in 1987. Some of the above-mentioned
operas and dramas have received awards from the Ministry of Culture.
In addition to operatic presentations, the Glee Club often takes part in
various concerts and full-length theoretical parties, as well as some
large-scale classical choruses, including the Yellow River Chorus, Beethoven's
9th Symphony and Verdi's Requiem.
The Glee Club has visited foreign countries with the COH many times and
performed the opera Der Zauberfloete in Japan in 1989 and 1992 respectively
where it was praised as a "powerful Glee Club" by Japanese review circles.
In 1998, the Glee Club, cooperating with world-famous artists, staged The
Masquerade at the Macau Arts Festival; at the beginning of 1999, it presented
The Flying Dutchman at the opening ceremony of the Macau Culture Center, both of
which achieved great success.
