Waiting for Godot
(2003-12-23)

"Waiting for Godot" is a world-renowned drama written by French playwright Samuel Beckett. The Chinese version of the play, directed by Meng Jinghui, was performed in a small theater in Beijing in 1991.

The stage was an enclosed space with a white floor, ceiling and windows. The audience sat on the stage and watched two tramps waiting for Godot. In the middle of the theater, a white tree was swayed by a white electric fan. A large heavy black piano stood in contrast to the white background. Furthermore, a lot of northern slang and children folk rhymes in the lines turned the originally tedious and dull speech into exciting dialogs. The change in the stylized performance and stage design caused a sensation among the audience. Meng Jinghui was the director of the Chinese version of this drama.
