Multicolor Chromatography and Color Printing

Printing writing or image with different colors on one plate is called the "duo se tao yin"(multicolor chromatography), which was started from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and used for making paper money.

By the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), two-color printing was used to print books, and it further developed into three-color and four-color printing. With the eventual arrival of large illustrated encyclopedias, pictures and illustrations became an important part of printing.

In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Hu Zhengyan invented the watercolor block printing for colored illustrations. In this technique, for every different color of the picture, a separate woodblock is made. Under the dynasty, color printing became ever more popular and its quality kept improving.
