China resumed its legitimate seat in the United Nations in 1971, and became a
contracting party of the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural
and Natural Heritage in 1985. As one of the member states of World Heritage
Committee, China plays an important role in and makes due contribution to
implementing the Convention. As a manifest of such endeavor, a total of
twenty-seven sites of Chinese cultural and natural heritage have been inscribed
on Unesco's World Heritage List up to the end of 2000.
The photographic exhibition WORLD HERITAGE IN CHINA comprises works, based on
the theme of the aforesaid twenty-seven heritage sites, by contemporary Chinese
photographers. The works demonstrate, from a distinctive visual angle and
through the photographic interpretation of Chinese culture, the extraordinary
scenic charm, the grandeur of the rivers and mountains as well as the unique
features of Chinese cultural heritage and historic monuments. The exhibition is
proud to present to the world, through the photographers' lenses, the precious
treasures and their outstanding universal value. The cultural and natural
heritage of China constitutes an important component part of the world heritage.
The Chinese government attaches great importance and renders strong support to
its preservation, administration as well as its rational excavation and
exploitation. Such efforts have yielded fruitful results, based on which are
accumulated rich experiences. Cultural exchange enhances universal understanding
of the cultural heritage and natural landscape of the nations in the world. It
is a common consensus of the Chinese people to join hands with the peoples of
the world to exert arduous efforts targeting protection of the precious
irreplaceable properties so as to bring forth a better today and a brighter
future for the mankind.
