Beijing is a city rooted in antiquity. Historical
records indicate that the first community was established on the site of
present-day Beijing over three thousand years ago. For over 850 of those years,
Beijing has served as China's capital. Beijing has both witnessed and
participated in the unbroken development of Chinese civilization. No other city
has been so intimately involved with China's evolution from a traditional to a
modern society.
Beijing is also a
city of youthful vigor. As the capital of the new China, Beijing presents many
and varied faces to the world, serving as the nation's center of government,
finance, culture, and international cultural exchange. An international
metropolis, Beijing does not lack for excitement. It is filled with renowned
universities, high-tech enterprises and information technology, theaters and
museums, shopping centers and recreational facilities. As ancient traditions are
replaced by the rhythms of the modern world, life in Beijing remains
surprisingly harmonious. The city is characterized by a spirit of creativity and
optimism that reflects the blending of old and new, as one type of experience
smoothly evolves into another.
Beijing's' vibrant
culture is based on traditional Chinese values. At the heart of traditional
Chinese culture is the concept of he, or harmony, with its connotations
of accord, tolerance, peace, stability, and friendship. These principles form
the ethical foundation of life in Beijing, and are inseparable from the city's
rich and diverse cultural achievements. As Beijing prepares to host the 2008
Olympics, the capital looks forward to the harmonious union of Chinese culture
and the Olympic spirit, and the meeting of China and the
world.
China's capital has
opened wide its doors, in order that Beijing may join the world community and
the world may come to better know Beijing. As China and Beijing gain increasing
international recognition and trust, their contributions to humanity will
continue to grow.
