1. A Blueprint for 10th Five-Year Plan

From March 5th~15th, 2001, 4th Session of 9th National People's Congress (NPC) of the People's Republic of China convened in Beijing. The meeting discussed and passed An Outline of 10th Five-Year Plan for Development of Chinese National Economy and Social Development, opening a new chapter in the construction for the modernization of socialism in China in the new century.

2. 80th Anniversary of Founding of Communist Party of China

On July 1st, 2001, a meeting in commemoration of 80th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held solemnly in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Present at the meeting were Jiang Zeming, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan
,Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing, and Li Lanqing. At the time when the CPC was founded eighty years ago, there were only over 50 party members, facing a calamity-ridden old China. Today after eighty years, the CPC has become a great party, having been in power for over fifty years and possessing over 64,000,000 party members, and the people have a prosperous socialist motherland.

3. China to Enter WTO

China is taking a positive posture to enter into the trend of globalization of economy. The 17th meeting of the Chinese Work Team of the WTO held from July 16th~20th, 2001 reveals that the drafting work of the legal documents for China to enter the WTO has been finished. Seen in the photo is a meeting between Shi Guangsheng (right), Minster of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of China, and Secretary General of the WTO Moor on February 18th, 2000 in Beijing.

4. Jubilee for Successful Application to Sponsor Olympic Games

On the night of July 13th, 2001, the citizens of Beijing are immersed in revelry all through the night to celebrate the successful application of Beijing to win the sponsorship of the Olympic Games in 2008. This is the night making all the Chinese most intoxicated since the beginning of the new century.

5. Thirtith Anniversary of China Restoring Seat in United Nations

In the 30 years since China restored its seat in the United Nations in 1971, China has made outstanding contributions to maintain the world peace and to promote common development.

Upper Photo: On 26th Session of the United Nations Assembly convened on October 25th, 1971, Chinese delegates Qiao Guanhua (first on the left) and Huang Hua are seen clapping hands with joy when the decision to restore all the legitimate rights of the People's Republic of China is passed.

Lower Photo: On April 18th, 2001, the 57th session of Human Rights Committee of the United Nations passes a motion put forward by the Chinese delegate and makes the decision that the motion of the so-called Status of Chinese Human Rights raised by the United States shall not be accepted and voted and the American scheme to interfere with the internal affairs of China by making use of the human rights issue at the Geneva Human Rights Conference meets with another defeat. Qiao Zonghuai, the Chinese delegate (first on the left, Qiao Guanhua's son), and others are seen clapping hands with joy at the announcement of the outcome of the vote.

6. Shanghai Cooperation Organization Founded

On June 15th, 2001, the first summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization convenes in Shanghai. The heads of the states participating in the conference are here seen raising glasses for celebration after signing Declaration of Founding of Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Shanghai Convention on Striking Against Terrorism, Splittism and Extremism.

The founding of Shanghai Cooperation Organization is sure for the six nations, i.e. China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Tadzhikstan and Uzbekistan, to lay an even solid foundation for the long-term cooperation of good-neighbor and friendship in the new century.

7. First Batch of Correspondents from Mainland to Station in Taiwan on the Way

On February 8th, 2001, Fan Liqin, (right) and Chen Binhua, Correspondents of Xinhua News Agency, are seen at the Hong Kong International Airport as the first batch of correspondents from the motherland mainland to station in Taiwan.

8. For Children's Future

From May 14th to 16th, 2001, the fifth Minister-level Consultation Conference of the Ministry of Children's Development in East Asia and Pacific Regions is held in Beijing. Wu Yi, Member of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, is elected chairman of this conference. Representatives from 21 countries and regions in this area participate in this Conference. They discussed and passed the Beijing Declaration to guide the children's development in the next ten years in this area. Seen here are the representatives printing their Finger Prints of Love on the banner Support Children.

9. A Flowery-aged Girl Falling Victim to Falungong Evil Cult  

On the afternoon of January 23rd, 2001, seven people infatuated in Falungong from Kaifeng of He'nan Province burned themselves at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Two people were found and stopped in time, one was burnt to death on the spot and the other four were seriously burned beyond recognition. After the occurrence of the incident, the Jishuitan Hospital in Beijing gave the wounded timely rescue and treatment. Liu Siying, a girl of 12, had 40% of her body severely burnt. Her two hands were so seriously burned that it was impossible for her to touch the Teddy Bear given by a nurse. After one month, Liu Siying's condition went from bad to worse and died after all ineffectual rescue measures. Her death reveals deeply the vicious nature of Falungong.
