1. People Playing With Macaques in Taihang Mountains

The Wulongkou scenic area in Henan Province is the best-protected ecological area in the west Taihang Mountains in Henan Province with natural vegetation. There are over 300 species of wildlife, of which Taihang macaque is a kind of macaque most widely distributed naturally in the northern region of the world. Taihang macaque, totaling 2,100, is a rare animal of the largest species group and also the largest number in this region. Seen here is a macaque standing on the top of the head of a little girl leisurely.

2. A Green Great Wall Extending into Sea of Death

The man-made afforestation engineering along the desert highway, the large-scale desert engineering, has been extended along the hinderland of the Taklimakan Desert, always known as the Sea of Death, since the winter of 2000. This engineering plans to plant a green forest belt with the average width of 60 meters along the Taklimakan Desert to conserve the highway in the shifting desert with the total length of 522 kilometers. The whole engineering is planned to be finished in the year of 2003. For economizing on water, the engineering uses drip irrigation to irrigate the forest belt. Seen here are workers conserving the drip irrigation network extending for tens of kilometers.

3. Er'hai Sea Clean Again

Er'hai Sea in Dali, Yun'nan Province, renowned as the Pearl on Plateau and the Mother Lake of the Bai nationality, was once polluted on a large scale by blue green algae. Now the water of Er'hai Sea is crystal clean again after four years of careful protective control done by the Government of Dali Bai Nationality Autonomous Prefecture. Egrets return to Er'hai Sea region in groups, bringing back life to the sea.

4. Inhabitants in Beijing Stressing Family Environmental Protection

On the Global Day, April 22nd, the Global Community, a nongovernmental environmental protection organization of Beijing, and the citizens of the Chunshuyuan Green Community at Xuanwu District conduct publicizing activities with the theme of initiating a green life. Liao Xiaoyi, Director of the Global Community, is seen introducing family environmental protection experiences to the citizens with lively and vivid picture posters.

5. Co-Existence of Fish and Vegetables

On May 10th, 2001, a Show of Modern Agricultural Technology and Products is held at the Exhibition Center of Jinxiu Dadi (a land of charm and beauty) Agricultural Co., Ltd. in Beijing. Shown here are the visitors watching with interest the co-existence system of fish and vegetables developed with the technology of soilless culture.

6. Hospital for Freshwater Shrimps

Deqing County, located at the northern part of Zhejiang Province along the southeastern seashore of China, has a space of 100,000 mu to breed freshwater shrimps. For bringing the initiative of the farmers to develop high-efficient agriculture into full play, the County Government has founded a hospital for freshwater shrimps together with related scientific research institutions, specially solving the technical problems the farmers meet with during the process of breeding. It is warmly accepted by the farmers. Deqing County is a small county with the total population of 400,000 and 0.7 mu of cultivated farmland per capita on average. With the high-efficient agriculture, the gross income last year from the country economy of that County reached RMB 14,448.5 million. 7. Surrounding River with Rails and Fixing Sands with Afforestration

In the spring of 2001, the government of Keshiketeng Banner (an administrative division of county level in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region) of Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia implemented the maintenance of the afforestation engineering at the various tributaries at the fountainhead of the Xilamulun River inside the Banner by surrounding the river with rails, planting trees to fix the sands and seeding grasses from planes. 170,000 mu of land in total has been afforested and 400,000 mu of land planted with grasses to control the sands. Marked effects have been made to improve the microclimate of the river-sand area, with vegetations planted along both banks of the river. Now, exuberant fragrant grass and clean streams can be seen flowing along the banks of the Xilamulun River.

8. Young Guards of Environmental Protection at Fountainhead of the Yangtze River

The First Young Guards of the Yangtze River, formed by over 100 Tibetan pupils of the Elementary School at Tanggula Mountains in Qinghai Province, is engaged in active activities at an elevation of 4,500 meters by the side of Tuotuo River, the fountainhead of the Yangtze River. They patrol periodically along the banks of Tuotuo River, picking up refuses and publicizing environmental protection. People intimately call them Young Guards of Environmental Protection. 9. Chinese Alligator Out of Danger

Chinese alligator, class
¢ñ rare animal under state protection, begins to break away from the endangered status. At the Chinese Alligator Breeding Center in Anhui Province, the total number of alligators in the Center reaches over 9,000 with the capability of breeding 500~2,000 young alligators annually. With several years' efforts, marked effects have been produced for saving the endangered wildlife in China and the wildlife resources tend to increase gradually. At present, China is speeding up its steps to let the endangered wildlife of a single species return to the nature for reducing the risk of extinction. 10. Baby Pandas Born into Panda Family

The information of the third general survey of wild panda carried out in the spring of 2001 shows that the number of wild panda at Wolong, Sichuan Province, is increasing and their habitat is also expanding. The number of the wild panda has increased 3% compared with that of the 1980s. By the end of 2000, 33 reserves had been established
,greatly improving the existence environments of the panda.

11. World Vitriol Capital Bidding Farewell to Pollution

Cangnan County of Zhejiang Province, located at the border of Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces, is known as the World Vitriol Capital with its reserves of 60% of vitriol in the world and 70% in China. The mining of vitriol here has had a history of over 600 years. The wastewater, waste gas and waste slag produced during the processing have polluted the surrounding areas. In recent years, for bringing the pollution under control, the two provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian have taken a series of effective measures for an overall treatment and finally have brought the pollution under control. Fish and shrimps seldom seen for quite a few years can be seen splashing in the Ganqi River again and the milky water is now crystal clean, becoming a River of Happiness for people of the two provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian living by the river. 12. Batch Production of Green Plants

In recent years, the Academy of Forestry Science of Jiangxi Province has been exploring new ways of combining scientific achievements with production. At the same time when they push actively to the market the new achievements made in science and technology, they establish a large-scale tissue culturing center for commercializing production of several hundred kinds of trees, flowers and plants, making the achievements of science and technology walk out of the lab. Scientific research people are seen here in the photo observing the growth of aloes in the greenhouse.

13. Sludge-Capturing Engineering at Hangzhou Section of Grand Canal Accomplished and Open to Navigation

At the beginning of July 2001, the service space of this engineering reaches 70 square kilometers. The sludge-capturing engineering at Hangzhou Section of the Grand Canal (Beijing-Hangzhou) is completely accomplished and open to navigation. With its accomplishment, the pollution at this section of the Cannel is basically resolved. Shown here is a bird's eye view of the Hangzhou Section of the Grand Canal.

14. Conserving Headwaters for Bumper Harvest

The fresh green crops are growing along fine on the thousand mu of terraced fields
,located at Fotang Village of Chuangwang Town at Tongshan County of Hubei Province by Jiugong Mounrtain National Forest Park. No signs of drought can be seen because the headwaters conserved by the Forest Park ensure the water to fight the drought.
