1. People Playing With Macaques in Taihang Mountains
The Wulongkou scenic area in Henan Province is the
best-protected ecological area in the west Taihang Mountains in Henan Province
with natural vegetation. There are over 300 species of wildlife, of which
Taihang macaque is a kind of macaque most widely distributed naturally in the
northern region of the world. Taihang macaque, totaling 2,100, is a rare animal
of the largest species group and also the largest number in this region. Seen
here is a macaque standing on the top of the head of a little girl leisurely.

2. A Green Great Wall Extending into Sea of
Death
The man-made afforestation
engineering along the desert highway, the large-scale desert engineering, has
been extended along the hinderland of the Taklimakan Desert, always known as the
Sea of Death, since the winter of 2000. This engineering plans to plant a
green forest belt with the average width of 60 meters along the Taklimakan
Desert to conserve the highway in the shifting desert with the total length of
522 kilometers. The whole engineering is planned to be finished in the year of
2003. For economizing on water, the engineering uses drip irrigation to irrigate
the forest belt. Seen here are workers conserving the drip irrigation network
extending for tens of kilometers.

6. Hospital for Freshwater
Shrimps
Deqing County, located at the
northern part of Zhejiang Province along the southeastern seashore of China, has
a space of 100,000 mu to breed freshwater shrimps. For bringing the initiative
of the farmers to develop high-efficient agriculture into full play, the County
Government has founded a hospital for freshwater shrimps together with related
scientific research institutions, specially solving the technical problems the
farmers meet with during the process of breeding. It is warmly accepted by the
farmers. Deqing County is a small county with the total population of 400,000
and 0.7 mu of cultivated farmland per capita on average. With the high-efficient
agriculture, the gross income last year from the country economy of that County
reached RMB 14,448.5 million. Seen here are the workers in the hospital for
freshwater shrimps examining the sick shrimps sent by the farmers for finding
the cause of disease.

7. Surrounding River with Rails and Fixing
Sands with Afforestration
In the spring of 2001, the government
of Keshiketeng Banner (an administrative division of county level in the Inner
Mongolian Autonomous Region) of Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia implemented the
maintenance of the afforestation engineering at the various tributaries at the
fountainhead of the Xilamulun River inside the Banner by surrounding the river
with rails, planting trees to fix the sands and seeding grasses from planes.
170,000 mu of land in total has been afforested and 400,000 mu of land planted
with grasses to control the sands. Marked effects have been made to improve the
microclimate of the river-sand area, with vegetations planted along both banks
of the river. Now, exuberant fragrant grass and clean streams can be seen
flowing along the banks of the Xilamulun River.

at Fountainhead of the Yangtze River
The First Young Guards of the
Yangtze River, formed by over 100 Tibetan pupils of the Elementary School at
Tanggula Mountains in Qinghai Province, is engaged in active activities at an
elevation of 4,500 meters by the side of Tuotuo River, the fountainhead of the
Yangtze River. They patrol periodically along the banks of Tuotuo River, picking
up refuses and publicizing environmental protection. People intimately call them
Young Guards of Environmental Protection. Seen here are the Young Guards

9. Chinese Alligator Out of
Danger
Chinese alligator, class ¢ñ rare animal under state protection,
begins to break away from the endangered status. At the Chinese Alligator
Breeding Center in Anhui Province, the total number of alligators in the Center
reaches over 9,000 with the capability of breeding 500~2,000 young alligators
annually. With several years' efforts, marked effects have been produced for
saving the endangered wildlife in China and the wildlife resources tend to
increase gradually. At present, China is speeding up its steps to let the
endangered wildlife of a single species return to the nature for reducing the
risk of extinction. Seen here are the artificially bred 3-year old young
alligators.

11. World Vitriol Capital Bidding Farewell
to Pollution
Cangnan County of Zhejiang Province,
located at the border of Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces, is known as the World
Vitriol Capital with its reserves of 60% of vitriol in the world and 70% in
China. The mining of vitriol here has had a history of over 600 years. The
wastewater, waste gas and waste slag produced during the processing have
polluted the surrounding areas. In recent years, for bringing the pollution
under control, the two provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian have taken a series of
effective measures for an overall treatment and finally have brought the
pollution under control. Fish and shrimps seldom seen for quite a few years can
be seen splashing in the Ganqi River again and the milky water is now crystal
clean, becoming a River of Happiness for people of the two provinces of
Zhejiang and Fujian living by the river. Seen here are children playing with
water in the stream.

12. Batch Production of Green
Plants
In recent years, the Academy of
Forestry Science of Jiangxi Province has been exploring new ways of combining
scientific achievements with production. At the same time when they push
actively to the market the new achievements made in science and technology, they
establish a large-scale tissue culturing center for commercializing production
of several hundred kinds of trees, flowers and plants, making the achievements
of science and technology walk out of the lab. Scientific research people are
seen here in the photo observing the growth of aloes in the
greenhouse.

13. Sludge-Capturing Engineering at Hangzhou
Section of Grand Canal Accomplished and Open to Navigation
At the beginning of July 2001, the
service space of this engineering reaches 70 square kilometers. The
sludge-capturing engineering at Hangzhou Section of the Grand Canal
(Beijing-Hangzhou) is completely accomplished and open to navigation. With its

14. Conserving Headwaters for Bumper
Harvest
The fresh green crops are growing
along fine on the thousand mu of terraced fields, located at Fotang Village of
Chuangwang Town at Tongshan County of Hubei Province by Jiugong Mounrtain
National Forest Park. No signs of drought can be seen because the headwaters
conserved by the Forest Park ensure the water to fight the
drought.
