3. Huada Gene of China Ranking 6th in World Gene Order-Testing Center

With the continuous efforts of scientists, the order-testing ability of China is being rapidly raised. The Huada Gene Research Center in Beijing (the Gene Group of the Biology Informatics Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), the largest base of gene order-testing and biological informatics in China, is the sixth largest gene order-testing center at present in the world, one figure higher than last year. As one of the main institutions of the 1% project of human gene group, Huada Gene now has 81 sets of order-testing instrument, equipped with instrumental facilities such as a Model Guguang 2000 large-scale computer and a high-capacity PC group. It is able to test the order of and analyze 30 million alkali base pairs. It is completely capable to be engaged in and accept major scientific research projects of international level, attracting many overseas scholars to join in. Huada Gene is basically founded by a scientific research contingent made up of the talented people with first-class biological information in the world. 4. Display of High-Tech Achievements in Scientific Researches

On February 26th, 2001, the Exhibition of Achievements of the State High-Tech Research and Development Plan (the 863 Plan) in the Past 15 Years is opened in Beijing. The exhibition shows a large number of achievements in scientific researches of world level in the fields of biology, information, automation, new materials, energy, and marine resources since the implementation of the 863 Plan of China. These achievements give an impetus to the development of the Chinese high-tech and other industries to a great extent and also provide the reforms of traditional industries with high-tech support. Seen here is a photo showing the first manned high-temperature super-conductive magnetic suspension experimental car in the world, developed and manufactured by Southwest University.

5. Great Breakthrough in High-Temperature Super-Conductive Researches in China

A 340-meter long high-temperature super-conductive bismuth wire is successfully developed and produced in June 2001 at the Applied Super-Conductive Research Center of Qinghua University, setting the record of drawing the longest high-temperature super-conductive wire in China and also marking that China has reached the world level in mastering the technology of commercialized super-conductive wire. This kind of new material has little loss, and the appliances made with the material have smaller size, lighter weight and higher efficiency, capable of civil use and national defense.

6. Gene Engineering of Stem Cell Benefiting New Century Infants in China

In May 2001, Ji Xingwang and Ge Xin, a couple in Tianjin, sign an official storage agreement with the Cell Bank of the Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell, Tianjin Stem Cell Scientific Research Center. It signifies that the stem cell gene engineering of China has stepped into commercialized operation from the scientific research stage. The cure rate of leukemia treatment with the technology of stem cell transplantation is as high as 50%. The umbilical cord blood stem cell stored at the time when a child is born means deposit of an insurance of life and health in the life bank for the child and the child's family. The photo shows the first case of the child with its own umbilical cord blood stored.
