1. Speeding Up Infrastructure Construction in the West
In the new century, China is to implement its strategy to
develop the West enormously, of which to speed up the infrastructure
construction in the Mid-Western area is one of the important tasks. Seen here is

2. Investors Home and abroad Marching into
the West of China
On May 27th, 2001, a delegation to
the West from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic
of China is having a survey at Turpan, Xinjiang, at the high temperature of
40 degrees

3. Panzhihua, Newly Developed City in the
West
Panzhihua, located at the
southwestern part of Sichuan Province, is a newly developed city with iron and
steel industry as its main body. It is rich in natural resources. The 300-km
long Fanxi Rift Valley at the Fanxi Area can be compared to the African Rift
Valley. Panzhihua, is located at the economic corridor of the Yangtze River,
linked with the Pudong Development Zone In Shanghai by the River. The Dongjiang
(east river) economic belt is formed with Pudong as the dragon head and
Panzhihua as the dragon tail. Panzhihua, the most important base of raw
materials in the western part of China, has established economic and trade
relations with over 30 nations and regions successively. The photo shows the

4. Train Talented People in Specific Fields
for the Western Area
The Stomatological Hospital of 4th
Military Medical University of the People's Republic of China gives full play to
the superiority of its scientific and technical talented people and medical
treatment, training actively high-quality talented people in the specific field

5. Chongqing Building Landscape and Garden
Cities in Western Area
Seen here is a bird's eye view of the
densely-populated residential area on the southern bank of Chongqing. Chongqing,
a municipality directly under the Central Government located at the southwestern
part of China, made an investment of RMB 200 million for urban afforestation in
the year of 2000.

6. First Freeway in Desert
Started
On March 14th, 2001, the engineering
of YulinĦĦJingbian Freeway in Shaanxi, the first freeway in the desert, has
started in an all-round way. It is an important component part of the south to
north thoroughfare from Baotou in Inner Mongolia to Guangxi and to
Beihai.

7. Qinghai-Tibet Railway Started
QinghaiĦĦTibet Railway is a symbolic
engineering to implement the strategy of developing enormously the West of
China. On June 29th, 2001, Phase II construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the section from Ge'ermu
to Tibet, was officially started. At present, that section is the longest
railway in the world to go through the plateau, the high and cold area, the area
short of oxygen, and the area with continuous permafrost with the total length
of 1,118 kilometers, of which 965 kilometers are in the section with its
elevation over 4,000 meters and 550 kilometers are in the section of frozen

8. Fruits and Vegetables Shipped to Lhasa
from Far and Near
Various kinds of fresh fruits and
vegetables in season, fish, and pork are available in spring, summer, fall and
winter alike for the people living in Lhasa, the plateau with an elevation over
3,600 meters. Even those vegetables not in season are available too in Lhasa

9. Hope Elementary School at World's
Summit
The Central Elementary School at
Gangga Village of Ding'ri County in Tibet, a Hope Elementary School constructed
with the aid of Shanghai at the foot of the Everest Mountain, has 181 pupils of
Tibetan nationality and one pupil of Han nationality receiving regular education
here, of which 72 are resident pupils because they live too far away from the
school. Ci'renquzhen, a girl of 10 from a remote area, values this learning
opportunity very much. The Chinese Government began to carry out the Engineering
of Eastern Area Schools Aiding Western Area Schools in Impoverished Areas in the
year of 2000.

10. Delightful Physical Education in Village
Elementary School
Zhang Lu and Zhao Yan, two pupils at
Zhaizimao Elementary School at Liulin County of Yan'an, Shanxi Province, are
seeing plying pommelled horse. Their common dream is to be a sportsman winning
medals at the Olympic Games.

11. White-haired Couple Enjoying Happy
life
Renzeng (first on right) and Yangjin,
a Tibetan couple over 80 years old living in Mozhugongka County of Lhasa, Tibet,
extend heartfelt thanks to the CPC for the wealthy life brought to the Tibetan
people. Up to the year of 2001, the total output value of Tibetan Autonomous
Region has topped RMB 10 billion with its national economy developed over the
average development speed of the whole country successively for six years, with
bumper harvest in agricultural production successively for thirteen years, and
with the supply of cereals, edible oil and meat basically self-sufficient.

12. Ever-bright Sky in Lanzhou
The night scenery of Lanzhou, an
important comprehensive industrial city in the northwest of China, is of
enchanting beauty. Since ancient times Lanzhou City in Gansu Province has been
the transportation hub leading from the inland of Central Plains (comprising the
middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River) to the Southwest and Northwest.

13. Evening Glow on Bird Island of Qinghaihu
Lake
Due to the environmental improvement,
the number of birds on the Bird Island of the Qinhai Lake is growing with each
passing day. There are more than 100,000 birds dwelling on the Island. Shown
here in the photo is the National Qinhaihu Lake Reserve Area under the evening
glow. The Qinhaihu Lake, located at the northeaster part of the Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau, is the largest inland saltwater lake.

14. Hongshui River, an Important Base for
Transmitting Power from West to East
The Hongshui River located at the
southwestern part of China has accomplished six large- and medium-sized
hydropower stations at Dahua, Yantan and Tianshengqiao (natural bridge) with the
total capacity of 4,082,000 KW and has become an important energy base in China.

15. Entering into New Lhasa
50 years ago, Lhasa was only a small
town with a space of 3 square kilometers and a population of 10,000. But today
Lhasa, a city basically with the special features of a modern city, has been
developed into a city with a urban space of 52 square kilometers and a permanent
residents population of 150,000. At present, Lhasa City has made the 6-year
education universal. There are over 71,500 students at different kinds of

16. Internet Bar in Lhasa
The wall of the internet bar of
Majiami Bar at Balang Street in Lahsa, Tibet, is decorated with Buddhist murals.
Visitors in such strong Tibetan atmosphere can communicate with the whole
world.
In the year of 2000, the output value of the
IT industry of China reached RMB 881.2 billion, ranking first in terms of
industrial scale in China and also in the world.

17. Local Conditions and Customs in
Southwest Make Visitors Intoxicated
The Langdeshang Mountain Fastness,
located at Leishan County of Miao and Tong Ethnic Autonomous Prefecture in
southeastern Guizhou Province in China, is a Miao ethnic mountain fastness with
a history of over 600 years. The fastness is surrounded by mountains and rivers,
and clattered here and there with rows after rows of traditional dwellings.
Their national festival activities are varied and colorful and their national
costumes gorgeous. In recent years, the mountain fastness, renowned as an
Open-air Museum of Miao Minority Conditions and Customs that has dropped all
affectation and returned to original purity and simplicity, has attracted about
800,000 visitors from over 40 countries in the world. Miao lasses and lads of
the Langdeshang Mountain Fastness are seen in the picture dancing a
drum-stepping dance in the threshing ground.
