The work of constructing flower sculptures to
celebrate China's upcoming National Day holiday on October 1st have commenced at
the capital's Tian'anmen Square.
It has long been tradition to decorate the landmark square with temporary
flower parterres during the National Day holiday.
This year's artwork is themed "From Athens to the Great Wall" in honour of
the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Around 400,000 potted flowers from over 130 varieties
will be used to form the shape of many symbolic structures, including China's
Great Wall and the Beijing Olympic Flame, as well as the Acropolis of Athens.
The construction is to be completed by September 29th.
Workers busy themselves on a flower
sculpture of the Temple of Heaven, the historical Chinese monument where ancient
emperors prayed for a good harvest.
