Born on the 1st of July, growing with the HKSAR

Both the Convention Center and the Golden Bauhinia Plaza have been silently witnessing the 10 year history of the Special Administrative Region. And in our next story, we have an living witness who's been growing up together with the SAR. The little girl in the photo is Leung Sum Mui, who was born right on July the first, 1997. She belongs to a typical middle class family.

As she gets ready to celebrate her birthday, Sum Mui is happy to show every visitor her photo album, a complete record of her short ten years.

Sum Mui's father, a bank manager, has been assigned to Shanghai. So Sum Mui and her mother usually spend the weekend with Sum Mui's grandparents.

Wong Siu Ling, Sum Mui's mother said, "It's a happy coincidence my daughter was born on the same day as the SAR. Sum Mui is a good girl, quite

docile, but she's a little chatterbox."

Ten years ago, the Special Administrative Region came into being. Over the past ten years, Hong Hong has experienced plenty of joy and grief. And despite the Asian financial crisis and the SARS epidemic, Hong Kong has come through more prosperous than ever.

But Sum Mui doesn't have much impression of these big ups and downs.

The gentle little girl seems to enjoy her life very much. Like many other families in here, their life now is as quiet and stable as it was before the Return.

And what Sum Mui looks forward to most is seeing her dad in Shanghai.

The family has decided to move to Shanghai and stay there for a couple of years. Sum Mui will go to a new school and have new friends.

Wong Siu Ling said, "We went to Shanghai earlier this year. Sum Mui is s girl who likes new things. She's satisfied with her new school. I think these changes are brought with the closer relationship with the Mainland."

Unlike the older generation, Sum Mui was born into a Hong Kong that was reunited to the motherland, and the family's moving to Shanghai may provide much more space for her development. Sum Mui will turn ten in a couple of days. so let's wish her and the SAR a happy birthday and a bright future.
