To
celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, Up-Close
interviewed influential people from Hong Kong about their last 10 years in the
HKSAR. Rita Fan Hsu Lai-Tai is one of these interviews.
An important figure in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, Rita Fan Hsu
Lai-Tai is President of the Legislative Council in the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region, the body that enacts, modifies laws for the HKSAR. Having
held this role since Hong Kong's return to China in 1997, it’s no doubt that
Mrs. Fan is the person who knows the Legislative Council best. What are the
functions of the Legislative Council? How long has it been in existence?
Audience and viewers of this program will learn more about this important
legislative body in an educational quiz we conducted in the studio.
Previously an educator, Rita Fan put in great energy and
effort to perform the role of President well, winning the respect of her
colleagues and constituents. In the public's eyes, Rita Fan is very strong in
all aspects of her life professionally and personally. She donated a kidney to
her daughter, and faced cancer with optimism and determination. How is she able
to do it all? Her family members and friends gave us more “inside information”
about Rita Fan and her life.
Rita Fan is indeed a very “strong woman”. But does she think so? The
studio audience discussed the definition of a "strong woman", and whether they
thought Mrs. Fan was one. Mrs. Fan also shared us her thoughts. She says that if
she had to choose between her career and her family, she would rather be a
housewife.
Happy to have the opportunity to communicate with Rita Fan intimately, our
studio audience came with many questions. Watch Up-Close on CCTV9 on June 17 and
24 to learn more about the important role of the Legislative Council of the
HKSAR and to hear the intimate and courageous stories behind Rita Fan’s last 10
years in Hong Kong.
