Last summer, twenty Chinese high school students spent a memorable eight days
in Japan. They're the first Chinese delegation of the Sony Student Project
Abroad program launched in China last year. This summer, an increased number of
students - ten more than last year - will join this program.
"Young Citizens, High Qualities" is the theme of this year's essay-writing
competition - set to select candidates. Compared with last year's "environmental
protection", it is a slightly more prescriptive title.

Shizuo Takashino, board chairman of Sony China during the 2006
event.
Wan Xuejun, Vice Secretary General of the China Youth Federation, co-host of
this program, says the topic keeps up with the times. Since China will be the
host of the Olympic Games, as well as hosting various other international
conventions, the national campaign to enhance Chinese citizens' personal
qualities is surging forward.
"High school students are now still only young citizens, but the future of a
city relies on them. How high their personal qualities are and what
contributions they can make to improve the overall appearance of a city are two
remarkable questions of concern to many people."
