The Drum Dance in Ansai

In Ansai, a small village in northern Shaanxi, nearly everyone is able to play Ansai Waist Drum. Kids start to learn it as early as seven or eight. The drum dance is originated in the ancient rituals of ancestor worship and has gradually evolved into celebration performance. With a large troupe of dancers, sometimes over 100 strong, jumping and dancing in unison to the beats of drums, this dance gives an awesome outdoor performance against a background of rolling hills and deep valleys. It exhibits a strong and vigorous display of bold and unrestrained body movements.
