The God of Wealth
The god of wealth is the most widely worshipped god in China, and
according to folk legend, the fifth day of the first lunar month is the god's
birthday. Therefore, after the setting off of firecrackers and fireworks on New
Year's Day (the first day of the first lunar month), the next important activity
is to worship the god of wealth on the eve of his birthday when feasts are laid
out in every household to celebrate his birthday.
There are gods of wealth with different names, such as "the orthodox god of
wealth," "the five heterodox gods of wealth," "the civil god of wealth" and "the
military god of wealth."
The civil god of wealth, with a white face and long hair, holds a treasure
pot in his hand, which led to the saying of "bringing in treasure and money".
During the Spring Festival, his portrait can be found hanging in the main hall
of nearly every Chinese household, symbolizing people's wish for fortune and
blessing.
The military god of wealth refers to a historical figure-Guan Yu, a man of
honor and personal loyalty who was mostly worshipped by businesspeople.
