Good audiences need to be cultivated
Updated: 2004-09-24

"Art creation not only has inevitability but also has big chanciness. Art is different from the industry, which can go upgrade step by step. It is fluctuant," said Liu Housheng, consultant of Chinese Dramatists Association and Chinese Traditional Opera Association.

Liu watched most of the dramas participating in the Seventh Arts Festival. He said that the dramas should be the excellent works in recent years and can represent the level of traditional opera, but it isn't realistic that dramas in this arts festival must be excellent than those in the former arts festival.

"China lacks excellent screenwriters and directors rather than excellent actors. We should spend more money and energy in cultivating the excellent screenwriters, which is the basic work and needs a long time", he added.

"Now the audiences are in the main the elders. If Chinese traditional opera wants to develop, more young audiences must be cultivated." said Shen Daren, famous researcher on Chinese drama. He also approved of bringing good dramas into the schools, which can let more and more people get to know the traditional opera.

Liu Housheg also highly praised the "Real and Fake Monkey King".
