'Three-Inch Golden Lotus' to be performed in Wenzhou
Updated: 2004-09-22

The Peking Opera "Three- Inch Golden Lotus", which exposes the abnormal aesthetic concept in the old society, will be performed in the Wenzhou Lucheng Culture Center, reviving the stunt "Qiao skill" which is close to be lost.

Adapted from a novel by the famous novelist Feng Jicai and presented by the Wuhan Peiking Opera Troupe, the opera tells of a story about "foot-binding women". Before the liberation, the "Qiao skill" was mastered by a few actors, but it gradually retreated from the stage due to some social conditions. The "Three-Inch Golden Lotus" brings the stunt into stage again.

According to Shi Yukun, director of the "Three-Inch Golden Lotus", the eldest actor who performs the "Qiao skill" is 59 years old and the youngest is 14 years old. They spent two or three years on hard practice to master the skill.

The "Qiao skill" is divided into "Hard Qiao" and "Soft Qiao". The "Three-Inch Golden Lotus", which lasts more than two hours, is regarded as the first opera that exhibits incisively and vividly the "Qiao skill".
