Sixth China Arts Festival

The Sixth China Arts Festival was an art gala held when China entered in a new century.

Held in 2000, the beginning of a new millennium, this year's festival set a milestone of the prosperous development of culture and art. After careful selection by the organizing committee with the Ministry of Culture and the performance department, a total of 104 stage performances entered the list, including 62 competing performances, 29 celebrating performances, 8 exchanging performances provided by foreign countries and Hong Kong and Taiwan regions, and 5 mass performances. With a scale larger than all the previous ones, this year's festival comprised performances of various styles, including traditional opera, modern drama, dance drama, acrobatics, magic, puppet show, and song and dance drama.

The Sixth China Arts Festival introduced in competitive element by setting up a series awards, including Festival Great Award, Excellent Performance Award, and Performance Award, with about 50 performances competing for these awards.

Moreover, the festival initiated the principle of market mechanism while adhering to governmental guidance.

Full of strong local flavor of Jiangsu, this year's festival had become a pageant for ordinary people, with its main venue set in Nanjing City and four sub-venues in Suzhou City, Wuxi City, Changzhou City, and Yangzhou City.

The festival used the Internet as its propaganda media to expand its impact and attract public attention.
