China holds folk arts exhibition Updated: 2004-07-01
Promoted by the Chinese Cultural Center in Cairo, Egypt, the China-Fujian
Folk Arts Exhibition was inaugurated at the Experimental Arts Institute of
Egyptian Hallewa University on June 14, 2004 as part of the "Chinese Cultural
Tour of Africa" activities to display China's advanced and diversified culture
from various angles. Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Sike, President of Hallewa
University Dr Adil, Dean of the Experimental Institute Dr Omar and more than 100
celebrities of the Egyptian literary world attended the grand opening ceremony.
This was the first time that Fujian
Province, assisted by the China Culture Center in Cairo, held a Chinese folk
arts exhibition in the Middle East. Egyptian newspapers such as The
Pyramid and The Republic, Chinese news agencies to Egypt, like CCTV,
Xinhua
News Agency and magazines like China Today -- all covered the event
extensively. Nile Satellite TV's cultural and educational channels even arranged
special interviews with Ambassador Wu Sike and Dr Adil at the opening ceremony.
The exhibition, which remained in the spotlight for a few days, featured live
shows, such as papercuts,
with handicraftsmen cutting out life-like human figures and all kinds of
exquisite designs.
During the period, two lectures and live shows on the Chinese folk art of
papercutting was held, further revealing Fujian's cultural features and the
profound Chinese culture to more Egyptian audiences, especially youngsters.
The exhibition closed on June 20.
