Situated on Potala Mountain in Lhasa,
capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, the Potala Palace was first built in the
7th century, for the wedding of the Tibetan king Songtsan Gompo and Princess
Wencheng of the Tang Empire. Since its completion, the palace has been expanded
many times. The main building of the palace has 13 floors, with a height of some
115 m and a construction area of 130,000 sq. m. Built on a mountain slope over
4,000 m above sea level, the Potala Palace is known as the Pearl on the Roof of
the World. Its construction and furnishing reflect the superb skills of ancient
artisans and the great attainments of Tibetan architecture, and also a
harmonious integration of Han and Tibetan cultures. It was put on the UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage List in 1994.
The Potala Palace abounds in murals
with different themes and other precious cultural relics. It is the winter
palace for the Dalai Lamas. |
