The Dazu Rock Carvings are located in
Dazu County, Chongqing Municipality. So far, a total of some 50,000 statues are
extant. The construction began in 650, and continued into the 17th century. The
Dazu Rock Carvings are an outstanding representative of China's grotto art in
the middle and late period of ancient China. They provide rich and valuable
materials for research into ancient China's arts, religion and history. The Dazu
Rock Carvings were put on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in
1999.
The Dazu Rock Carvings mainly contain
Buddhist statues, but there are also some Taoist, Confucian and historical
figures and folk life portraiture. The Dazu Rock Carvings serve as records of
the multi-culture harmony.
