Located south
of Wuyishan City, Fujian Province, with an area of 70 sq. km, the area has a
typical Danxia landform. The cliffs and waters of Mt. Wuyi are outstanding. The
Stream with Nine Turnings is emerald green and crystal clear. The forest
coverage of 95.3% and abundant flora made it nominated as a reserve of UNESCO's
Man and the Biosphere Program in 1987, and included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1999.
Mt. Wuyi is also famous for its
historic and cultural relics. Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism all have left
their influence there. "Xingxian Academy", located at Wufu County, was the place
where the famous idealist Zhuxi gave lectures in the Southern Song Dynasty
(1127-1279). Its beauty and cultural relics have made Mt. Wuyi known as the
most attractive mountain in Southeast China.
