Photo Show of World Heritage in China in New York

To mark the 30th anniversary of the restoration of China's legal seat in the United Nations, a cocktail party honoring the opening ceremony of a large-scale photo show of the World Heritage in China was given at the Asian Cultural Center in Mahattan's central city by the Chinese Consulate General in New York. Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Chen Jian, Chinese Depute Permanent Representative to the United Nations Shen Guofang, US ex-Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger, leaders of local institutions and corporations of New York involved, permanent representatives to the United Nations and Consuls General in New York of some countries, and celebrities among local overseas Chinese, 200-odd in total, were present on invitation at the gathering filled in an animated atmosphere.

Chinese Consul-General in New York Zhang Hongxi made a speech at the ceremony. He recalled what happened thirty years ago when the 26th United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to restore all of China's legal rights in the United Nations. He then gave an account of China's positive participation during these 30 years in the activities of the United Nations, which had resulted in a constant elevation of China's status and influence in the United Nations. He stressed by saying, The September 11th attacks indicate once again that the international terrorism has constituted a serious threat against world peace and stability and has become a vicious public hazard. China resolutely condemns and opposes all forms of terrorism and stands for dialogue and cooperation in international society to crack down on international terrorist activities in concerted efforts. At the same time we hold that in striking terrorism the United Nations Charter and requirements of recognized international law should be observed, that the functions of the United Nations should be brought into full play, and that all actions taken should be contributive to the long-term interests of world peace and development. With the acceleration of the process of economic globalization, all forms of transnational crimes such as traffic in narcotics, illicit immigration, etc. are becoming increasingly serious, affecting greatly the political and economic development in each country. China would like to enhance cooperation with every country in the new century in keeping these crimes from spreading.

Ambassador Shen Guofang gave an account of China's participation in affairs in every respect of the United Nations. He pointed out in particular that China would enhance cooperation with the United Nations in peace-keeping and other fields in the new century.

Dr. Kissinger also delivered a passionate speech. He has visited China for 27 times, seeing with his own eyes drastic changes occurred there. Since China restored her legal seat in the United Nations, he said, the Sino-US relationship has gradually resumed and diplomatic relations established. The Sino-US friendly and cooperative relations are of vital importance in keep world peace and normal relations between big countries in the world. He concluded that he believes that leaders of both countries are aware of it and Sino-US friendly relationship will certainly be further improved in the new century.

There were on display nearly 60 photos, featuring 27 UNESCO-confirmed world cultural and natural heritage sites. These marvelous photos were highly praised by visitors. Some were lingering there reluctant to leave. Ambassador Zhang Hongxi told the visitors that China has rich and colorful tourist resources and it is worthwhile for them to go there to have a look with their own eyes. Some diplomats among the visitors expressed their wish to have opportunities to go to work in China so as to better understand China and Chinese culture.

The well-known local Asia Association Exhibition Hall and the Botanical Garden on the Staten Island are preparing to have these photos exhibited in their places next year.
