Photo Show of World Heritage in China Held in Copenhagen Denmark

A large-scale photo show of the World Heritage in China, co-sponsored by Copenhagen municipal government, Chinese Embassy in Denmark, and Sino-Denmark Phil-China Association, was held at the City Hall of Denmark capital Copenhagen from August 1st to 17th, 2002.

An official ceremony was held at 2 o'clock on August 12th hosted by Copenhagen Mayor-in-charge-of-culture Martin Jittson. In his speech he set a high value on Chinese culture. The Chinese Charge d'Affaires ad Interim to Denmark Wang Canfen gave an account of the efforts China made in protection of world cultural heritage and achievements obtained. She expressed the hope that the exhibition will be contributive to a better understanding of China and an awareness of protecting world cultural heritage.

Nearly 300 people attended the ceremony, among whom were the Chief Royal Bodyguard Solon Haslen Christison and his wife, ambassadors and foreign diplomatic missions in Denmark, emeritus president of Denmark International Exposition O. Philipson, leading persons in charge of Denmark cultural organization, officials from Copenhagen municipal government, members of congress and friendly people from all circles.

The photo show of the World Heritage in China vividly revealed the 27 sites of China's cultural and natural heritage confirmed by UNESCO. The venue of the exhibition was in the center of Copenhagen municipal government compound. Hanging on the public square were China's national flags, with posters bearing photos of giant panda, terra cotta soldiers and horses, etc. putting up all around. It happened to be a busy tourist season and visitors came in an endless stream. Optical disks and manuals about exhibits provided free of charge were much welcomed by visitors.

The World Heritage in China photo show started the prelude to a series of cultural activities to be launched before or after the Asia-European Summit in Denmark, constituting a splendid view of Chinese culture for the city of Copenhagen.

The exhibition was held respectively in Gentofte Library during October-November 2001, in Arhus City in February 2002, and in Yelin Royal Museum -- a site of world cultural heritage in Denmark -- from April to June, 2002.
