Photo Show of World Heritage in China Successfully Held in Tunisia

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the legal seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations, a World Heritage in China photo show jointly run by the Chinese Embassy in Tunis and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tunisia was opened at the Tunis Baldu State Museum on May 8, 2002. Chinese Ambassador to Tunisia Zhu Bangzao and Tunisia Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Abudelbaky Elmashi were present and cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony. Tunisian ex-Minister of Internal Affairs Jiga and his wife, diplomatic envoys of Russia, Japan, the Unites States, South Africa, Romania, Sweden, Austria, Morocco, Turkey and Oman, Tunisian people in cultural and press circles, altogether 300-plus in number were present at the opening ceremony.

There are 57 exquisite photos on display depicting 27 UNESCO cultural heritage sites in China, including Great Wall, Imperial Palace in Beijing, the terra cotta soldiers and horses of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty in Xi'an, Dunhuang Grottoes, Huangshan Mountains, Jiuzhaigou and Wuyi Mountain.

Minister Elmashi, in the company of Ambassador Zhu Bangzao, watched with interest the photos and wrote on the visitors' book, I attended and presided over the opening ceremony of the exhibition with an excited frame of mind. The 27 sites of cultural, natural and tourist legacy embody Chinese civilization. As Tunisia's minister of culture, I feel greatly honored to have the exhibition staged at the Baldu State Museum. May the friendship between the Chinese and Tunisian people be ever lasting! The ex-minister of internal affairs stated that the exhibition is well organized and that to visit the exhibition is a sheer delight as well as a kind of nurture in civilization. The Russian counselor said, The exhibition has indisputably indicated that China is a country of old civilization in the world. The cultural heritage in China is also the world's achievements in culture and civilization. The photos on display are of good quality. We look forward to more high-leveled exhibitions like this one. Quite a number of visitors asked for optical disks recording World Heritage in China.

On May 19th, 2002 the International Museum Day, the Baldu State Museum administered an Opening-to-Youngsters Day activity in which over 300 students took part. The curator launched a contest for knowledge on the exhibition among the students. It was an animated occasion. The organizer of the show prepared nice keepsakes for winners and offered DVD film show about Chinese cultural heritage at the end of the contest.

As was warmly welcomed by the audience, the exhibition, originally planned to last for two months, was extended at the request of Tunisian Ministry of Cultural for another month till the middle of August. As it happened to be a busy tourist season as many as 250,000 visitors came in a continuous flow, giving the exhibition a lot of publicity. The Tunisian newspapers News and Times made enthusiastic reports about the exhibition.
