Chongqing Sichuan Opera Troupe Participates in Seoul Art Festival 2002

Chongqing Sichuan Opera Troupe is one of the ten major local opera troupes in China and the largest troupe for performing special art in the Southwestern area of China as well. It grows out of Chongqing Municipal Experimental Sichuan Opera Troupe founded in 1951.

Since its founding 50 years ago, a large number of well-known actors and actresses with great accomplishments have been brought up. The old generation of actors and actresses has played an important role on the Chinese theatrical stage. At present, the young and middle-aged backbone performers have become the leading actors or actresses in the artistic production of the Troupe. The Troupe has been actively engaged in exploring and collating as well as recomposing the ancient theatrical pieces, having accumulated large numbers of preserved theatrical pieces, such as Jinzi, A Story under Willow Shade,A Story of Pipa (a plucked string instrument with a fretted fingerboard) and Peacock Gallbladder. It has also been trying to create new ones by making efforts to explore and practice the creation for modern Sichuan Opera.

In recent years, the Troupe has participated in many important performance activities, such as the First and Sixth Chinese Art Festivals, the First and Second Chinese Drama Festivals, the artistic performance at the Eleventh Asian Games, the First Chinese Sichuan Opera Festival, and the Shanghai International Art Festival. Its performances have been well received by the people from all walks of life. The troupe has been awarded several major prizes, such as the Grand Prize of Chinese Art Festival, the Gold Prize of the Chinese Sichuan Opera Art, and the Prize of Chinese Traditional Opera Association.

For a few decades, the Troupe often goes abroad for artistic exchanges. Its performances are highly commended by foreign friends and overseas Chinese and warmly welcomed by the compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, making contributions to the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
