To celebrate 30th anniversary of normal of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, the 20-Person Modern Chinese Calligraphy Show cosponsored by China External Art Exhibition Center, Japan-China Friendship Guild and Asahi Shinbun and assisted by Chinese Calligraphers Association was held from August 18th to 24th, 2002 at Tokyo's Japan-China Friendship Guild Art Gallery, displaying 40-plus pieces of noted Chinese calligraphers including Qi Gong, Shen Peng, Ouyang Zhongshi, Liu Bingsen, etc.
Calligraphy, with a history of 3,000 years, is a brilliant cultural treasure of Chinese nation. As a long-standing and well-established form of art, it has been regarded over the years as traditional painting with feelings, music movement without sound, dance on paper and clouds on inkslab that presents beauty and delight. Chinese calligrapher was spread to Japan as early as two thousand years ago where the ingenious Japanese people merged its strong points into Japanese culture and created calligraphic art of their own.
A sea of clouds arising from the inkslab links the two countries; brush and ink manifests feelings for Japan. The show, as is quoted above, is sure to make significant contribution in boosting calligraphic exchanges and enhancing friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries.
