-- To Mark 30th Anniversary of Normalization of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Japan
It happens to be 30th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan this year. On such a memorable occasion and to further beef up the exchanges among youngsters of the two countries, Chinese Cultural Ministry, All-Japan Student Calligraphy League and Financial Group Corporation Japan-China Friendship Guild is to hold Sino-Japan juvenile calligraphy show in Japan in September 2002.
This is the first Sino-Japanese calligraphy show initiated by Chinese cultural ministry. It indicates that our government attaches great importance to the training of young calligraphic talents, enhancing calligraphic art and expanding international exchanges. In order to demonstrate the highest achievements of Chinese youngsters in calligraphy, we have decided to solicit contributions among young calligraphy lovers. Calligraphic works intending to be exhibited in the show are welcome.

* Title of the Show: Sino-Japanese Juvenile Calligraphy Show
* Show Tine: September 18th~24th, 2002
* Venue: Japan-China Friendship Guild, Tokyo, Japan (100 each of Chinese and Japanese calligraphic works)
* Prize-awarding Evening: Great Hall of the People or Home of Calligraphy. All those who participate in the show can apply for joining
* Requirements: Paper specially used for calligraphy, no need mounting, wholesome in content, Unpublished, written with writing-brush, verses expressing peace or friendship or quotable quotations,
* Measurement: 68cm x 25cm; 68 cm x 68cm; 96 cm x 64cm
-- Qualifications:
Age: elementary school group; high school group (including senior high school)
Status: Chinese and Japanese juvenile calligraphy lovers
Number of Works: one piece each for each different style of calligraphy (no repeated applications or qualifications denied)
Procedure of Application: place your works and application form (filling up carefully each blank) in an envelop and send it by post together with an application fee of RMB 150 to the office of the organizing committee. All mails must be registered. Name, and address of the work and application fee must be in conformity in the void of either the application will be considered as invalid. Prize-winning works can be returned to the owner if ask for. The application fee will not be refunded whether the works win prize or not. No quitting half way.

Method of Appraisal: All works are examined and appraised collectively by members of the appraising committee

1. First Prize 10
2. Second Prize 20
3. Third Prize 60
4. Prize for Works of Excellence 2,000
5. All award winners are required to attend the prize awarding evening and make a work on the spot with writing material of their own. The works impromptu will be appraised on the spot and witnessed by notary public. Ten winners will be decided in the light of works, speech and deportment and title of Soaring eagle of Sino-Japanese juvenile calligraphy granted;
6. Units made effective efforts in organizing youngsters to join in the activities will be granted Sino-Japanese juvenile calligraphic soaring eagle excellent organizer prize;
7. Tutors of the first, second and third prize winner will be granted gardener prize
8. Units ushering in over 50 participating works will be granted talent-scouting prize.
-- Relevant Activities:
Master taking: Members of the appraising committee will hold a voluntary pupil taking ceremony and signing master-pupil agreement on the spot. Each member is to take no more than two pupils each time. The master is to give guidance to his pupil for no less than 30 hours per year;
Shooting a special video film about the whole process of the appraisal and the prize awarding evening live broadcasted;
Publishing selected works of The first Sino-Japanese juvenile calligraphy show. 2,200 pieces will be chosen including works of excellence;
Inviting prize winners to the prize awarding evening to be held either at the Great Hall of the People or at the Home of Calligraphy. They are also to part take in the serial cultural-sightseeing-in-Beijing activities arranged by the organizing committee such as visiting the two top universities, three major locations, four noted gardens, five chief cultural sites, attending flag-raising ceremony at the Tien'anmen Square and paying respects to the remains of Chairman Mao (all participants of the show may apply for joining in the activities);
Mobilizing youngsters countrywide to join in the activities. At the end of the show, 10 best award-winners will be chosen by the participants of the show (ballots can be found in the book the Selected Works) and granted Sino-Japanese juvenile calligraphy soaring eagle public mass prize at the next prize-awarding ceremony.
Deciding five lucky fellows by lots from among the ballots on the spot who will have the privilege to participate in the activities of juvenile exchanges in Japan free of charge. Those who do not take part in the activities will not be compensated with equal value cash.

-- Points for attention:
* The competition office will try its best to protect the works participating in the show apart from losses caused by force majeure
* Results of appraisal will be notified to the unit for participants who join in the activity in the name of unit and to individuals otherwise. Prize winners are not permitted to withdraw from the list of winners or cost arising therefrom shall be born by themselves;
* Participants are requested to make clear in the application form regarding whether attending the prize awarding evening, buying the selected works (the number of copies if buying), or whether or not to have the certificate or cup of prize sent to him by post in case they have won prizes
