Oil painting was brought into China from the West. As we assume an open
attitude, not merely the form, material and medium, but modern theoretic concept
of oil painting has also come accompanying it. However, what we aim at is to
merge the western oil painting with the Chinese cultural ideology and to create
an ideal sphere for the development of our national art.
The emergence of modern Western art in the
20th century, from our point of view, is a step closer towards the East. The
traditional Chinese artists favor traveling ten thousand miles of land, reading
ten thousand volumes of books, and being close to nature yet not imitating
nature, nor being enslaved by nature.
In the 21st century, we have still an
important task i.e. to sum up conscientiously the aesthetic significance of
major archeological discoveries in China in the past hundred years. We are to expand our field of vision to
more artistic sphere apart from the traditional Chinese paintings. So much new
discoveries are there waiting for our younger generation to recognize and
explore into so as to be able to make more meaningful creations. We are in the
belief that the revival of culture will make up for the deficiencies in
one-sided development of science and technology.
