Wang Zhaojun was the former concubine of Emperor Han Yuandi. She was later married afar to the Chieftain of the Huns. The Han regime was not strong enough to resist the invasion of the Huns due to weakness of the Emperor and incompetence of the court ministers and officials. Wang Zhaojun, filled with grief and indignation, was forced to assume her mission of marrying afar to the Chieftain of the Huns in order to defend the Han from foreign invasion and seek a cease-fire between the two belligerent parties.
