Cultural Agreement Between the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Government of the People's Republic of China

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Government of the People's Republic of China, for the purpose of further developing friendly relations between the two countries and strengthening their cultural cooperation, have agreed to conclude the present Agreement, the articles of which are as follows:

Article 1

The Contracting Parties pledge to encourage cooperation and exchange in the fields of culture, arts, education, news, radio, television and public health, on the basis of equality and mutual benefit and mutual respect for sovereignty.

Article 2

The Contracting Parties shall cooperate closely in the promotion of the following:

(a) Exchange of visits of cultural officers, writers, artists, scholars and teachers;
(b) Exchange of under-graduates or postgraduates, on a scholarship basis for study in universities or institutes of higher learning in the other side;
(c) Exchange of visits of representatives of news agencies, reporters and journalists.

Article 3

The Contracting Parties shall provide facilities for the exchange of performing art troupes, and for organizing cultural and art exhibitions and film weeks in the other country.

Article 4

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the exchange and cooperation in the fields of radio and television and therefore a specific agreement on this subject may be signed in accordance with the present Agreement.

Article 5

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the translation and publication of prominent works in the field of literature and art of the other side.

Article 6

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the exchange and cooperation between their National Commissions for UNESCO.

Article 7

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the exchange and cooperation between youth in the two countries.

Article 8

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the exchange and cooperation between physical culture and sports organizations, and exchange of visits by athletes and sports teams from the two countries.

Article 9

The Contracting Parties shall encourage the exchange and cooperation in the fields of tourism and public health.

Article 10

The Contracting Parties have agreed that the executive programs and financial terms concerning the implementation of the present Agreement shall be agreed upon later by the two sides.

Article 11

The present Agreement is temporarily put into effect from the date of signature, and shall come into formal effect from the date of notification by each Contracting Party to the other of the fulfillment of the respective procedures required by their internal laws. The present Agreement shall remain in force for a period of five (5) years. Thereafter it shall be automatically extended for further periods of five (5) years unless either Party notifies the other of its intention to terminate the Agreement by giving written notice six (6) months prior to expiration hereof.

The present Agreement is done in Beijing in July 1980. In duplicate in English and Chinese languages, both texts being equally authentic.
